Please keep in mind that Sole proprietorship and partnership registrations do not protect your business name; others can register and use the same name. To protect your business name you need to incorporate your business, and/or apply for a trademark.
In order to operate a new business in Ontario you will need the following:

  • Checking the availability of your new business name
  • Register your business name
  • Apply for an HST number
  • Apply for WSIB account (mandatory if you will have employees)

For starting a corporation in Ontario you will need the following:

  • Choose the name of the corporation
  • Check the availability of the corporate name
  • Gather all information required to file the Articles of Incorporation
    • Name and address of the business
    • NUANS search report that is less than 90 days old
    • Description of the business activities
    • Name and address of each Director
    • Name and address of each Shareholder
  • Filing the Articles of Incorporation
  • Filing the initial returns (must be filed within 60 days of registration)
  • Apply for HST/Payroll/WSIB Accounts, Import & Export Account
  • Apply for commercial general liability insurance
